‚Synthetic Suburbia‘

Culver City

Ed Templeton is currently showing Synthetic Suburbia at the Roberts & Tilton Gallery. Coming from the skate community, Templeton draws his inspiration from the suburban area of his childhood. Synthetic Suburbia is a depiction of Huntington Beach. This beach was a traditional summer vacation destination for the Templeton family and became the stimulus and common thread of this solo exhibition, the third one at the Roberts & Tilton Gallery.

Bikinis, phones, cigarettes, jogging, wood barricades; here are Ed Templeton ideas of Huntington Beach. He comes over all of the little things that seize the landscape and therefore depicts some upper realistic and caricatured portraits. Pop colors invade the canvas in an unillusioned way. With ‘Leopard Leggings Thighs’ or ‘Man Waters Lawn’, we are confronted to a situation of déjà vu. This lady is the one with crosses so many times in the street and this man strangely looks alike our neighbors. Templeton depicts the everyday life with a sharp eye and that might explain why he qualifies himself as a voyeur.
