Michaël Borremans
‚Black Mould‘
London
For his fourth exhibition with the David Zwirner Gallery, Michaël Borremans investigates the romantic world of characters overwhelmed by urging landscapes, yet lacking romantic references. ‚Black Mould‘ marks another great show of the artist, along with ‘As sweet as it gets’ which is on view in Dallas until the end of July.
The characters are the central focus of the pieces. Yet their smallness is consumed by the extensiveness of the landscapes. They contradict with the accustomed life-size portraits of Borremans but the techniques and style bear his signature hallmarks. Indeed, Borremans does not hide the main influences that he found in Great Masters such as Goya or Manet. In‘Black Mould’ the viewer is confronted with faceless personages that convey an unease typical of the Belgium artist. The variation of scale brings about an unclear situation wanted by the artist who aims at a loss of references and recognition. With that in mind, Borremans creates ‘senseless actions’ as he calls them, in which people are forbidden from any actions, in a waiting state.
