‚Framed and Frame‘

London

Framed and Frame is the essential and unique piece of Mike Kelley’s new exhibition at Hauser & Wirth. The monumental installation from 1999 has been recreated on the occasion and inhabits two rooms of the gallery space.

Framed and Frame is an homage to America’s subcultures and especially to the Chinese community leaving in downtown LA. It consists of two separate sculptures divided by a wall. The first installation is a grotto-like block made out of concrete with colourful spots. On the grotto, stand religious statuaries, coins, candles and trees. On the other side of the wall, an installation retakes the fundamental structures of a Chinese temple, yet coupled with prison-like barbed wires. Both installations embody the story of persecution and exclusion of which the Chinese American community suffered from. Framed and Frame informed Kelley on his famous Memory Ware series.

On the occasion of the exhibition, Hauser & Wirth London’s Book & Printed Matter Laboratory is dedicated to the works of Mike Kelley. The Lab focuses on giving a deeper understanding of the American artist’s corpus.
