Abrams just released Frida Kahlo – The Gisèle Freund Photographs by photographer Gisèle Freund. The book recalls the two years trip the Berlin-born photographer made to Mexico. Former member of the Magnum Agency, Gisèle Freund mainly concentrated her career on documentary. The celebrity and artistic circle marked another focus. She produced a wide arrange of portraits. Namely, the Frida Kahlo book mixes both documentary pictures with intimate captures.

Freund’s book reveals more than 100 rare and even unpublished pictures of Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, their legendary and colorful house, as well as the temple built by Diego in order to exhibit his own artistic collection. Each photograph is accompanied by some notes of Freund herself who spent two years – from 1950 to 1952 – capturing moments of the couple’s intimacy. As an introduction Gérard de Cortanze, biographer of Frida Khalo outlines the artist’s life, career and death along with quotes of Gisèle Freund’s personal diary of her stay in Mexico.

Although the book title comprises ‘Frida Kahlo’, the book is just as concern about Diego Rivera, underlining how essential the other half of the couple was to the other. Posing or simply working, Kahlo and Rivera and their surroundings inhabit the whole book. Both black and white and colors Freund’s photographs are all tinted of tenderness and familiarity.
