A Study of Studies

A Study of Studies-the current exhibition at The Outsiders-is an exhibition of preparatory studies from a stellar international line-up, featuring many of the gallery’s most popular artists including Jonathan Yeo, Lucy McLauchlan, Conor Harrington and Sage Vaughn.

Studies are drawn or painted by artists in the earliest stages of planning a new work, and offer a fascinating glimpse into their methods. Although these works are sometimes small they are always spirited, with a notable vitality provided by the artist’s imagination springing into gear. A study can be a fantastic addition to an existing body of work, or an affordable way to start such an anthology.

Moreover, the unorthodox nature of the high-profile artists appearing makes A Study of Studies especially fascinating. Premier portrait painter Jonathan Yeo has provided a number of new works in his ‚Leaf Study‘ series combining naturalism and naturism. These bijou works, featuring plant leaves made from adult magazine clippings in the style of his “Blue Period”, employ contrasting Modernist graphics to create effortlessly contemporary pieces. First lady of UK street art Lucy McLauchlan, an artist also noted for appreciating both flora and the female form, shows works that journey to the core of her ethereal world. Megastar-in-ascendance Conor Harrington has painted several of his sought-after ‚Morning Glories‘, small canvases which he paints each day upon arrival at his studio. Fellow Irishman Oliver Jeffers graces The Outsiders for the first time: known worldwide for his children’s books, Oliver’s paintings are witty and charming visual parables for grown-ups, with wonderfully varied influences taken from the worlds of street style, physics, and art history. Also new to The Outsiders is France’s Jacques Floret. The uber-illustrator showcases contrasting sketches inspired by foot fetish erotica and fishing trips, using the four-colour biro pen that’s his trademark. California’s Sage Vaughn presents more of his tremendously popular pieces created using collage and painting on postal envelopes. New York’s Dan Witz reveals his sensual side with a number of nude sketches. From Australia, Charlie Isoe is a hugely exciting young artist. His studies showcase the beguiling brushwork of his larger canvases.
