Doug Aitken is the name of Doug Aitken’s book accompanying the artist’s retrospective at the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt likewise entitled Doug Aitken. From July 9 to September 27, 2015 the works of the American artist were presented through a first extensive exhibition of his works in Germany. His corpus that combines film, music, architecture and performance is analyzed through the different perspectives of the museum director, curators and scholars.

The exhibition catalogue covers the exhibition through individual and deep analyzes of Aitken’s main works. His Sonic Fountain, Song I, Black Mirror, Migration (empire) and Diamond Sea are all reviewed by different experts. These new and thoroughly done perspectives are accompanied by full pages of images offering the best of the artist’s work. His videos installations, a practice that he began in 1997 transcends transcends disciplines. As Aitken points out : «I am interested in a three dimensional use of video in which the technical means constitute and invisible architecture and create a system of experience in which architecture, film and music are of equal importance.» This process can be observed through Sonic Fountain. A multiscreen installation highlighting the importance of sound and rhythm in Aitken’s work. With Migration (empire) it is the animals that are taking over. On the opposite of Black Mirror and Song I in which humans are vedettes. The book, just like the exhibition, is an experience that „begins in perception and ends in activity. » indicated Schirn Kunstahalle’s former Director Max Hollein.
