Friedrich Kunath
Earth to Fuckface

Friedrich Kunath’s provocatively titled exhibition Earth to Fuckface may be a shocker initially for an art exhibition, but its content are in fact the reverse. A resident of Los Angeles since 2007, the German artist combines his love of German Romanticism and pop ephemera to produce paintings that are laden with cultural references from Winnie The Pooh’s Eeyore to Jiminy Cricket from Pinnochio, Biblical figures to obscure mid to late 20th century style comic and cartoons. The exhibition title is in fact a deliberate escape plan for Kunath not to give a literal description of the works in the show.

A lover of ebay and collecting all types of objects from vintage Jaguar to kitsch figurines, Kunath often recasts himself and his family through a range of characters in his paintings. Some of them become recurrent characters, like actors in a soap opera where they occupy the space of the canvas in an anti-formalist arrangement, against a range of classic glowing sunsets or nocturnal landscapes.
