Gabriel Orozco
‚Suisai: Tokyo Strokes‘

Hong Kong

Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco is currently exhibiting his exploration of drawing and painting at White Cube Hong Kong. The show is entitled Suisai: Tokyo Strokes and is thus referring to the city Orozco is currently living in since last year.

Places occupy a predominant role within Orozco’s work. As a traveler, never settling down, the artist explores the hazards of his travels in his works. For Suisai: Tokyo Strokes, the Japan and the city have literally been source of inspiration. The series is made with watercolors and gold leaves enhancing the use of watercolor, a technique often disregarded in the West and appreciated in the East. This series is inspired by the organic nature of Orozco’s art with the prerogative that the artist „doesn’t know what nature is“. Far from his most iconic Black Kites (1997) a human skull covered with graphite, this new series is a 2D one working with geometry as an extension of the natural world and therefore the habitat we live in.
