With ‘THE BANNERS’ The iconic artistic couple Gilbert & George further explores the messages they delivered during the Serpentine Marathon. With a corpus claiming the anti elitist slogan ‘Art for All’ Gilbert & George prove it again through this new exhibition.

‘DECRIMINALISE SEX’, ‘BAN RELIGION’, ‘FUCK THE TEACHERS’,’BURN THAT BOOK’. Here are some of the messages appearing on the thirty banners in the White Cube gallery. This new series, differs from the previous ‘The Pictures’ or ‚Jack Freak Pictures’ which played with highly colored graphic content and representational images of the couple itself. This time, only their writing language appear. Each slogan is introduced by the sentence ‘Gilbert & George say’ in the artists familiar signature in red followed by activist black sayings.

As explained by Michael Bracewell, THE BANNERS define ‘a moral vision that is a t once libertarian, atheistic, monarchist and existential. All are proactive. They each propose the disruption of modern conventions or sophistry as a means of encouraging individuals to think for themselves.’
