With ‚H.C. Westermann see America First: works from 1953-1980Venus Over Manhattan is presenting a rare yet considerable overview of more than 100 works by the American sculptor and printmaker.

Westermann has been labeled too many times without that any of these names completely suit him. From surrealist to minimalist, all of these movements were not enough to characterize his art. Above all else, Westermann was a soldier that did both World War II and the Korean War, events that left a permanent mark on his work. When PopArt was having a great presence, Westermann decided to focus on his own manual skills and to develop his carpentery art. Hence, his sculptures converge with traditional marquetry techniques with both a sense of humor and irony. The name of the show ’See America first’ comes from the 1964s’ paper work series and hints at Westermann’s nationalist love that transcends his body of work. Along with the paper series, sculptures and illustrated letters written to his longtime friends and art dealer Allan Frumkin are on display.
