The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam is currently exhibiting works by the world-famous painter Henri Matisse. The Oasis of Matisse is a grand premiere in the Netherlands given that it is the first large-scale exhibition ever of the painter in the country. On this occasion, some of Matisse’s most famous pieces are juxtaposed with artworks of the museum collection. Thus, Malevich, Rothko, Newman or Mondrian are discussed in the context of Matisse’s art pieces.

‚The Parakeet and the Mermaid‘ are the central artworks of The Oasis of Matisse. Created during the last years of the French artist’s life, this big size paper cuts convey Matisse’s explorations of the underwater world. Seaweeds and mermaids appear in pop colors and define contours in order to deliver the artist’s will of making sincere decorative art.

The Oasis of Matisse transmits Matisse’s obsession with primary colors as well as his astonishing evolution through his career. Indeed, from his Orientalist Obelisk to his uncluttered paper cut, the artistic change is at the heart of the exhibition, following Matisse’s path and expansion.
