Larry Bell
‚2D-3D: Glass & Vapor‘

Jul 16, 2015

London

The White Cube Mason’s Yard is currently presenting the ‚cube‘ master himself: Larry Bell. His cubes are installations reflecting the ‘Light and Space Group’ intentions. First called ‘Primary Sculptures’, these pieces are made out of formica, brass and wood simultaneously being mirrors and windows, changing the environment while reflecting it and therefore depending on the lighting and setting to deliver their maximal effect.

‘2D-3D: Glass & Vapor’ is Bell’s fourth show with the White Cube gallery. To represent the oeuvre and career of the American artist at best, the exhibition shows both distinctive glass installations and coated paper works – the two main poles of Bell’s work. ‘6 x 8 An Improvisation’ is a characteristic piece that evolves and involves the viewer. The glass surface reflects the spectator, while deforming and emphasizing the setting and space around it. With his ‘Vapor Drawings’ Bell demonstrates another side of his work, the one that concerns the vacuum chamber, a technic that he discovered in the 70s’ and that , since then, didn’t stop to inspire new works to the artist whose trademark was found in the 60s and forever reinterpret ever since.
