‚Me‘

Me is the word summarizing the 21st century at best. And it is also the title of a group exhibition currently running at Schirn. Inspired by the mainstream motto ‘Me, myself and I’, there are 40 artists on display representing the history of the self-portrait with their works showing an unconventional and unexpected approach to the form of representation.

Adam Curtis entitled our age as the ‘The century of the Self’. And he pretty much nailed it. More than ever, our current era is dictated by Selfies and narcissism. So much that it inspired a whole show to the Schirn Kunsthalle. Far away from Old Masters conventional bust paintings, the artists on view challenge the self, its meanings and associations. Wolfgang Tillmans is on view with a work showing his knee, Erwin Wurm with an installation representing pickles of different sizes and Thorsten Brinkmann with a collage recovering his face and torso with a used cardboard box. All works demonstrate that in fact, no face needs to be shown in order to allude to the topic of the self. Hiding is the new exposing as showcased by the 40 participating artists at Me
