The Brooklyn Museum presents Boombox Retrospective, 1999-2016 a Tom Sachs exhibition. The American artist known for reworking items from the mass, street and consumption cultures pays tribute to one of the epitome of street culture with this show focusing on Boomboxes solely.

Sachs intervenes with society’s production. Earlier on with his Hermès Hand Grenade and Prada Deathcamp, later with the practice of ‘bricolage’ that he developed using collected materials that he regenerates into a new syntax. The Boombox Retrospective is no exception to the rule. Through eighteen works, the artist inventively reworks this ordinary and informal object in order to highlight its iconic street essence. The series therefore ranges from seemingly traditional radio such as Model One to highly crafted pieces as embodied by Guru’s Yardstyle, a combination of plywood, batteries, duct tape, wires and hot glue protected by an umbrella. The sculptures respond to Sachs motto: „We have our system of making things out of certain materials… and of showing the scars of our labor and the history of our efforts… We have the ‘your way’, ‘my way’, and ‘the right way’, and I must insist everything is done my way, even if it takes longer. »

An earlier version of the exhibition entitled Tom Sachs: Boombox Retrospective 1999-2015 could be seen until the end of January 2015 at the Contemporary Austin.
