New York

Tony Oursler is on show at the Lehmann Maupin Gallery in New York once again, this time at the 201 Chrystie Street. The solo show presents some of the most singular artworks from the American artist who brings under control the association and connexion of a plethora of different media. He incorporates videos in each of his pieces, giving them a brand new dimension by mixing sounds and moving images with static artworks.

Tony Oursler discovered the projection techniques in 1990 and adapted it since then in order to create his revolutionary installations. His videos feature faces parts – eyes, mouth – or an entire face, moving, speaking, screaming and transferring therefore their emotions on the stationary art pieces on which they are projected. With this concept of “screen-sculpture” Oursler can therefore insert language in any sort of objects, from a doll, to a dumb. The infinite human emotions are indeed what rhythms Oursler’s works to which he adds a decent amount of oddness and peculiarity.

At the border between cinema and sculpture, Oursler’s installations are radical 3D films asking for a constant reflexion and involvement of the viewer in order to be visually completed.
