Ulrich Strothjohann
‚Mapping Holes‘

Sunday Read

A golf track, an abandoned cement wheel on a beach and a bin leaning against a tree have nothing in common at first sight. Yet, Ulrich Strothjohann dexterously links them with each other. His Löcher der Welt (Mapping Holes) series shows holes that the 62 old photographer captured around the world. Now, he bundled them all up and published an eponymous book together with Hatje Cantz.

The publication presents all 116 black and white pictures of the series that concentrates on the depiction of objects only. The introduction is written by the artist himself as well as the closing words that are statements of the artist giving perspectives on holes such as « The hole is the only place without time » as well as it is making oneself stumble » and makes you « arriving somewhere different than where you want to go ». The essence of each picture is emphasized and sublimated by the layout choices purposely chosen by the artist. A selection of works from the publication are currently on view in Mapping Holes, the exhibition at the Adamski Gallery.
