Naples

This Spring, Sadie Coles HQ presents Urs Fischer at Naples-based T293 gallery. The New York artist is quite remarkable by his ease to rise from one medium to the other. Indeed, ranging from sculptures to photography, to installations, Fischer is an all-rounder. Famous for his melting wax figures, the Swiss artist is now presenting a new sculpture involving a toilet.

Alluding to vanitas, death and memory, Urs Fischer’s solo show is full of references while been inventive all at once. With his toilet work – clear allusion to Duchamp’s Fountain – he creates a vision of endless abundance by filling up with fruits to the very top a freestanding toilet. The wasting predominance of today’s society is thus a central focus that Urs Fischer depicts with irony and simplicity. One of his typical and eminent skeleton sculpture is as well on show. Sat on a chair, as frozen in an instant moment, Fischer’s skeleton suggests death and vanitas with a touch of macabre humor. Alongside with theses sculptures, the exhibition features some of Fischer’s silk-screened painting.
