‚Vogue Like a Painting‘

Madrid

‘Vogue Like a Painting’ is the first ever photo exhibition on view at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid. Collecting pictures of Vogue magazines from all around the world, the exhibition displays photographs alluding to some of the greatest masterpieces such as the famous Girl with a Pearl Earring from Vermeer or the Three Graces of Rubens.

Therefore, the exhibition brings together some of the greatest artists from the past centuries with some of the greatest photographers of our century. Mario Testino, Tim Walker, Peter Lindbergh, Horst P. Horst and Annie Leibovitz reset the pieces of Vermeer, Hopper, Balthus, Botticelli and Degas to name a few. Printed at the scale of the original artworks, the photographs take a whole new significance than on a magazine page. Structured around three major genres; portraitures, landscapes and interiors the show recalls characteristics traditionally attributed to painting such as dramatic chiaroscuro, theatrical settings, poses and décor. But without forgetting Vogue’s main purpose; the embellishment of the clothes.
