Barbie

Mrz 9, 2016

Paris

She has been a housewife, an astronaut, dressed by Sonia Rykiel and drawn by Andy Wahrol. Since 1959 Barbie adapts to our society being a constant projection of its changes. For the first time now, the iconic doll is recognized through an eponymous exhibition at Les Arts Décoratifs in Paris.

Barbie survived half a century, constantly modifying its appearance to accommodate the trends of our time. She incarnated each and every cultural craze from Marilyn Monroe and Star Trek to Grease and Coca Cola. Since the beginning of this year she can even be found in different colors and shapes. Without doubt, Barbie is a testimony of the 20th century and its mass culture. The exhibition covers every aspect of the subliminal doll that was the childhood companion of most children. Constantly changing with its time, she is, just like art, a reflection of our current society and history.
