Indonesian artist Christine Ay Tjoe is showing in the UK at the White Cube for the first time. On this occasion, Ay Tjoe created twelve new paintings including two large-scale diptychs that represent the epitome of several series and years of work.

The work of Christine Ay Tjoe recalls the one of American artist Cy Twombly. On canvas, she depicts line, whether straight, curvy or broken in colorful and earthy tones. These abstract and beautiful figures are metaphors for figures of authority that influence and shape our behavior. Beyond their pleasant aesthetics, the paintings encompass a large range of strong emotions, thoughts, melancholy, struggle, pain and happiness emulating her personal life as well as, on a bigger scale, the comprehensive feelings of humans beings. The artist points out that she „talk(s) more about what will happen in terms of human trends, local or global; what I see as possibilities in my mind, personal ideas.“
