‚Where Nature Runs Riot‘

The Berlin-based Sprüth Magers gallery is currently showing ‘Where Nature Runs Riot’, an exhibition with Cyprien Gaillard. It releases Gaillard’s new film ‘Nightlife’ shot over night in three cities – Cleveland, Los Angeles and Berlin. Along with this major piece, the sculpture ‘ Ammonite Dub’ is on show as well as several Polaroids from a new series. Entitled ‘Sober City’ the pictures capture element of the Natural History Museum of New York.

With Nightlife, the central piece of the show, the French artist explores the diversity of cities and museums. The short film begins with the shooting of an original version of The Thinker of Rodin – probably the most influential sculpture of the 20th century – then swipes over to subjects like swaying trees and fireworks and. A very present soundtrack goes with the film giving it a hallucinatory turn. Another room of ‘Where Nature Runs Riot’ displays two sculptures, one entirely made out of 7’’ records named ‘Reid/Coxsone’, another testimony to his esteem for soundtrack. The show closes on some Polaroids, all interconnected by the presence of a large amethyst crystal and alluding to the geological time and the whims of history, two favourite of the artist.
