The Heroes is the emblematic title of Georg Baselitz’s new exhibition at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt on the Main. The eponymous series is a turn point and core fundament within the oeuvre of the German painter. In the frame of the show, it constitutes the landmark of this comprehensive retrospective retracing fifty years of practice.

In 1965, Baselitz began the prominent Heroes series. Although 20 years after World War II, the paintings reflect upon its aggressivity, soldiers, and uncertain future. The figures are unexpectedly colossal while featuring surprisingly little heads, leaving the realms of figurative art. The Shepherd is representative of Baselitz’s New Type workgroup that visualizes the artist’s political stance, while the Tree is notably empty of any human presence, a rare case within the German painter’s oeuvre.

The touring exhibition will travel to the Moderna Musset Stockholm, the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome and the Guggenheim Bilbao.
