Gert & Uwe Tobias
‚Grisaille‘

Munich

Twin brother Gert and Uwe Tobias are the creators of Grisaille, the current exhibition at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. Far from their usual vibrant tints, the show is all about subtle grey tones. No wonder as the title – Grisaille – is a multi-sense French term for greyness, greyish tinge, grey tones and monotony.

The work of the Tobias revives ancient techniques. Wood-cuts, lace, folding are all combined with the fantastic characters and fauna created by their visual imagination. Although usually working with colorful tones and naïve designs, Grisaille brings about a whole new sphere of their universe. For this exhibition, the two brothers made use of the ‘Grisaille’ technique to create. It is an approach from the 14th century thereupon mainly used for illumination and manuscript. These pastel tones flirts with details of plants and their signature Transylvanian personae on big scale woodcut and smaller paper works. On the occasion of the exhibition, Gert & Uwe Tobias created a somber mural for the room welcoming their last ceramics creations.
