In February 1983, Monika Sprüth opened her first gallery based in Cologne and focused on feminine artists. As such, and to counter a ‘Cologne over-run by male artists’ she published three issues of a magazine entitled ‘Eau de Cologne’ and featuring artists that the gallery is still, thirty years later, working with.

The new Sprüth Magers exhibition is therefore costarring the emerging artists of the 80s who are now internationally acclaimed in the names of Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, Cindy Sherman and Rosemarie Trockel. Taking the Eau de Cologne magazine issues as a departure point the show presents the emergence of the artists through their various exhibitions, artworks and evolution. Barbara Kruger’s prints project for the British magazine Dazed & Confused, Trockel’s CLUSTER or Cindy Sherman ‚Untitled Horrors‘ (2013/2014) series are on view as to represent the fruition of the years. All in all, the show works like a recapitulation of the last three decades of art history and of Sprüth Magers history.
