‚War Paintings‘

Venice

In cooperation with the „Written Art Foundation of Frankfurt„, „The Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia“ is currently showing „War Paintings“ by Jenny Holzer. On the occasion on the 56th Venice Biennale, the Correr Museum has been chosen to represent a decade of war painting from the American artist. Along the show, a special catalogue will be published by Thomas Kellein, the curator of the exhibition.

Jenny Holzer’s works respond to a series commitment. Evolving around the themes of sex, death and war, her pieces are strongly emotional. For „War Paintings“, she examines military operations by the United States in Afghanistan and Iraq. Diplomatic communiqué, planning maps and autopsy reports are some of the sources that inspire Holzer for her paintings. Her works are here to denounce the normalization of torture and bring a human gaze on the American wars.
