New York

Columbian-British artist Oscar Murillo is presenting through patches of corn, wheat and mud at David Zwirner gallery. The enigmatic exhibition’s title hints at the whole process Murillo went through with the artworks on view that comprehend taking part in ritualistic performances with local spiritual guides in Southeast Asia.

Murillo is known for his strong interrogation of contemporary display forms. through patches of corn, wheat and mud is part of this interrogation with as the central piece ‘a futile mercantile disposition’, a maze-like room-sized installation that reunites hundreds of black paintings. Each canvas is painted on both sides and is hanging on metal wires. In the adjacent room ‘Black Monday/Tuesday’ a commentary work on the stock crash market of 1987 is representative of Murillo’s traditional paintings. Yet, as the artist made use of black paints only, his individual layers signature are hard to discern. Also on view is ‚Them‘. An intimate travel journal released last year by Murillo and that encompasses family pictures and drawings along with illustrations of his famous layering technique.

The exhibition is takin place along Printed Matter’s 2016 New York Art Book Fair at the MoMA and in which David Zwirner is presenting the printing performance ‘Room Services’ by Oscar Murillo.
