Berlin

Berlin-based Schinkel Pavillon is currently showing a Paul McCarthy exhibition. The American artist is mainly known for his sexually oriented plastic figures as demonstrated with his gigantic ‘Tree’ on the place Vandôme during last years edition of Paris-based art fair FIAC when he made headlines in 2014. For his exhibition at the Schinkel Pavillon, McCarthy concentrates on the body image and perception.

As a teacher of art performance, video and installation at UCLA, McCarthy uses a wide range of media to perform his show. The core of the exhibition is a replica of his ‘Horizontal’ (2012) piece, which realistically and faithfully represents the artist own naked body lying on a table. Thus, he interrogates the society taboos through an obvious and shameless rough nudity. On the ground floor, the video installation ‘That Girl T.G. Drawing Table – Drawing’ (2011-2013) plays again with the nude body, his representation, apprehension and expectation, this time through the physique of a woman, hence interrogating the figure and the space.
