‘What is art?’ a question already approached and asked by plenty of artists and scholars. Yet, this time the plastician artist Takashi Murakami takes a stand and puts a brand new light on the topic through the ‘Takashi Murakami’s Superflat Collection’ that he exhibits at the Yokohama Art Museum.

Murakami is world-widely known for his imagery inspired by Japanese manga that he conveys through his monumentales sculptures, paintings, and through collaborations such as his bags for Louis Vuitton and Kanye West’s record sleeve. For this intimate exhibition, the Japanese artist introduces the visitor to his often unknown personal art collection. The leader of the Superflat movement is the proud owner of a collection that impresses by its quantity and diversity. Pieces from Anselm Kieffer, Frank Besson, Yoshitomo Nara or Anselm Reyle are all reunited under the same roof in order to celebrate the multifaceted artist. Asian and European art, contemporary and antique, all are valued equivalently to form ‘Takashi Murakami’s Superflat Collection’.
