London

Tal R is currently exhibited at the Victoria Miro gallery. With Chimney school of sculpture, the Copenhagen-based artist delivers a solo show that spreads on both floors taking up the whole space. Tal R creats a connection in between functionality and creativity. His furniture features new Scandinavian rugs and his sculptures are made out of simple fabric covered wood. High and low cultures bounding are a distinctive component of every Tal R’s creation.

Material and forms respond to no hierarchy. They are all used and diverted in the same way. Tal R Chimney’s sculptures are a good example of this practice. Very minimalistic, but yet vibrant and pigmented these wood sculptures are a reminiscence of candy cane sticks affianced with air instruments and standing tables. All of it covered with precious fabric. Tal R evokes thus the relationship linking popular and high culture in a visually pleasant and performative way. Alongside with the Chimey pieces, are displayed his Raku sculptures. Created through a sixteenth-century Japanese technique, these artworks are made out of clay which final form Tal R cannot control. Again the artist shows how much ambivalent and surprising art can be, always appearing where he does not expect it and taking control on his creation.
