Terry Richardson
‚The Sacred and The Profane‘

With The Sacred and The Profane, Terry Richardson explores the American West. Being his first solo show at Galerie Perrotin since 1999, it all begun with the idea of documenting American’s rites such as fairs and festivals. But, in the process, Terry Richardson changed the topic zooming the sex industry into focus. Already famous for his suggestive photographs, the American now evokes the mystical, religious and sexual with his new exhibition.

The erotic taboo is leading this solo show referring to the American puritanism and omnipresence of the church. Next to Richardson’s typical naked women, there are shops, bars and motel’s on view referring to the South West and the duality between religion and the sex market. Jesus is watching you is a perfect example: the eponymous sign shares the frame with an Adult Video logo in this artwork. Thus, all the American symbols are reunited in a single photograph.

Richardson brings together Jesus Christ’s representation and mystification and some actual American icons such as Miley Cyrus – only recognizable thanks to her wrecking ball – in order to share his vision of a “Holy Land U.S.A.”
