Josh Smith
´Sculpture´

New York

For his new show with the Luhring Augustine Gallery, Josh Smith exposes new works of lines and abstract figures. Entitled ‚Sculpture‘, the name of the exhibition is quite the contrary to the media on view.

Smith is known for his abstract imagery expressed by paintings, collages and books. For ‚Sculpture‘, the artist used a wide range of different tools and materials to shape the final materialization of his pieces. As such, one painting can contain different materials such as watercolor, rabbit skin, glue, calcium carbonate, pigment, ink, grease pencil and transfer drawing. Each and every piece is therefore an experiment of itself cruising in between different utensils in order to appear as a very unite and graceful visual. Bellow its naive and doodle appearance, Smith’s works convey the abstraction of contemporary symbols and motifs which give a 3D essence to his sculptural body of work.
