Dutch artist Willem De Rooij is currently, and for the third time, exhibiting at Petzel Gallery. With Rye Wonk, De Rooij keeps exploring the abundant possibilities of hand woven abstract tapestries that he first produced in 2009. Along with this series, there are his famous bouquets on display as well as other artist’s works, ethnographic objects and collaboration installations that embody De Rooij’s constant examination of authorship meaning.

In between a piece of textile and canvas, De Rooij’s art pieces call out by their materiality. His weavings ornate the walls combining colors and textures in order to create art pieces full of tension. His bouquets are as well displayed. This series begun in 2002. It explores the concepts of diversity and individuality. These two themes are as well present through De Rooij’s installations of other artists’ works and collaborations with florists and photographers. By doing so, the artist interrogates the notion of authorship and the process driving from the individual to the collective.
