Museum Folkwang presents ‘Le noir’ an exhibition featuring the iconic black paintings of French artist Pierre Soulages. As emphasized by its titled meaning ‚The black’ in english, the show honors the second part of Soulages’s career and his discovery of his emblematic ‘Outrenoir’.

With ‘Le noir’ the Museum Folkwang honors the corpus of one of the most important artist of the 20th century along with a brand new never seen before 2015 piece. Entitled ‚Peinture, 159 x 202 cm, 30 Octobre 2015’ the painting keeps exploring how the color black can enhance and organize light. First discovered by chance, his ‘outrenoir’ that literally signifies ‚going beyond black’ became his signature. With more than 1550 paintings -all entitled ‘peinture‘ followed by its dimension- Soulages’ oeuvre is one of the largest one. Mono pigmented works of physical presence with a strong materiality symbolize Soulages’ ‘outrenoir’ series. By doing so he underlines effects such as meditation, sensuality and violence. As a leader of abstract art and informal painting Pierre Soulages, and ‘Le noir’ discuss some of the main components of our current society.
