Amsterdam

Prominent Chinese performer, sculptor, photograph, architect and curator Ai Weiwei is now honored by a solo show at Foam museum in Amsterdam. The exhibition #SafePassage touches the very actual refugee subject. Ai Weiwei and his team travelled to Syria, Turkey, Italy, Israel and France to compose this photographic testimony.

As an activist, Ai Weiwei lived as a political refugee under constant government surveillance. It is therefore with personal interest that the artist covered the current refugee crisis. #SafePassage regroups marble sculptures and films along with thousands of photographs. These pictures taken with the artist’s cell phone form altogether a hefty collage rising attention onto the refugee crisis. The exhibition follows Foam Magazine issue #43 entitled ‚Freedom of Expression under Surveillance‘ and of which Ai Weiwei was guest editor.
