London

For the first time in London, John Waters is exhibiting his works at the Sprüth Magers Gallery. Entitled ‘Beverly Hills John’ the show evokes the past and present of the American director and producer. Even though this show is far from reaching the trash content of his earliest productions – Pink Flamingo (1972) or Polyester (1988) – Waters remains faithful to his very unique aesthetic.

One and only place leads John Waters’ works; Baltimore. Every one of his movies, production and artworks are produced and designed there and thus incorporate plenty of references to Waters’ place of birth. With Beverly Hills John, Waters presents an overview both of his actual and classical works. Shoulda! (2014) plays with the appearance and tragic destiny of five women whose Whitney Houston, Princess Diana and Amy Winehouse while Kiddie Flamingos (2015) is an obvious references to his prominent Pink Flamingos. During 74 minutes, kids are performing a scene from the original movie. Some replicas have been changed but the plot is still here, adding even more perverse ton to the overall scene. Beside the cinematographic works, Walters presents some fake surgery portraits. Justin Bieber with Justin’s Had Work (2015) and of course is Water’s self portrait are bloated and transformed by silicon injections, a reference to the excess and absurdity incorporated in every works of the artist.
