‚ELLIS‘

Miami

For the Art Basel Miami Beach Art Fair the Galerie Perrotin is presenting a pop up exhibition from JR named ‘ELLIS’. The show is a continuance of the eponymous one on view in New York. It stages both the movie ‘ELLIS’ that JR directed and the photograph series ‘Unframed Ellis Island’.

‘Unframed Ellis Island’ is part of JR famous unframed projects that previously took place in Grottaglie, Italy, Vevey, Switzerland, Sao Paula, Brazil, Washington USA, Marseille and Lille, France and Baden-Baden, Germany. Without taking himself the pictures, JR cuts out existing photographs to then paste them on the landscape, metamorphosing it. With the Ellis Island series it in in the nowadays-abandoned Ellis Island hospital that JR pasted his figures. As a central place for immigration in the early 1900s, the hospital is a prevalent one for the history of America. Nurses operating, families waiting or patients lying in bed are the subjects of the series and ghost inhabitants of the place.

Along with the photograph series, the movie ELLIS staring Robert de Niro recalls the history of the place.
