Cologne

Philip Emde is presenting is first solo show with the Ruttkowski;68 gallery. The exhibition is entitled ‚It’s Not the Darkness I’m Afraid Of...‘ as an allusion to his monochromatic thoroughly and bodily worked with graphite. Known for his exhibition that could fit in a shoe box, this time the German artist surprises through big scale canvases and installations.

Philip Emde expresses himself through contrasts. His non-figurative works are marked by simplicity yet present the imperceptible and the peculiar as well as the obvious and the subtle. On paper, he illustrates the proximity of opposites – using both sides of the sheet to show how closely they sit. While one side of the page is continuously worked over with graphite, the reverse is a monochromatic colorful that reverberates on the wall. The surprising invisibility of the opposite side contradicts the physical and emotional pain transmitted through the front. The ongoing process is a transcription of the emotions and motives that habits Emde.

As a pendant to the dark series, long and thin white stick lean against the wall projecting a vivid color on the wall looking like neon lights. On the playful side, fluffy pets installation point as well to the humorous facet of Emde whose emotion range goes wide.
