Seth Siegelaub
‚Beyond Conceptual Art‘
Amsterdam
‘Seth Siegelaub: Beyond Conceptual Art’ enlightens the life and art of the Conceptual Art pioneer. From art dealer, to curator and editor, the American born multitasking artist is honored through a retrospective at the Stedelijk museum.
His ground breaking approach freed artists from the obliged galleries and traditional exhibition structures to rather expose and create in flexible places and medium. Such a process announced the beginnings of Conceptual Art. Working with Sol Le Witt, Carl Andre, Robert Morris or Robert Barry, Siegelaub revolutionized the view and act of curation. By questioning the way and means of exhibiting and the wider specter of art history, he set the rules for a new form of art that gave him the name of ‘father of Conceptual Art’.
‚Beyond Conceptual Art‘ focuses on the redefinition of exhibition spaces and Siegelaub’s passion for mass media practice and scholar research. Instead of traditionally exhibiting the artists he curated, Siegelaub decided to publish them. The Xeroxbook is a representative of this phenomenon. Seven artists – Carl Andre, Robert Barry, Douglas Humbler, Joseph Kosuth, Sol LeWitt, Robert Morris and Lawrence Weiner- collaborated on the edition, thus blending mass media and high culture. This singular approach on curation as well as the often unknown textile collection of Siegelaub compose the main core of the inventive retrospective devoted to the ever inventive artist.
