Essen
The vitra. by storeR in Essen is currently presenting a large selection of items by American architect, interior, furniture and textile designer Alexander Girard.
Girard is widely known for his textile design. He created geometric and colorful patterns for the designs by the likes of George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames. Being a compulsive collector, Girard compiled thousands of dolls, icons and various ethnic objects from around the globe. The exceptional collection of over 100’000 pieces is on view at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe. His own collection is the main source of inspiration for many of Girard’s works. In 1965, he redesigned the entire plane of the Braniff Airways company, from the sugar packets to the tickets counters to the color of the planes themselves. A work made in collaboration with the Hermann Miller Textiles Division for which he designed countless textile designs throughout his life among which some are available in the vitra. by storeR.
