New York

The Museum of Modern Art New York is currently presenting a Yoko Ono exhibition. ‘Yoko Ono: One Woman Show, 1960-1971’ traces back the artist’s career within the MoMA institution and outside of it. Singer, performer, visual artist, musician, writer, actor, Ono is a complete artist to Japanese roots who evolved in between London and New York. Mostly recalled for her status of muse and wife of John Lenon, Yoko Ono’s career started well before and kept going well after the musician’s impact on it.

With the ‚One Woman Show‘, the museum refers to Ono’s past exhibitions such as ‘Museum of Modern (F)art’ or performances with the memorable ‘Painting to be Stepped On’ (1960) or ‘Bag Piece’ (1964). More than 125 objects illustrate the extensive artistic production created by Ono over the years. Ranging from audio recording, films, to work on paper, installations and performances the body of work is characterized by its diversity. The 11-year display mainly focuses on the Conceptual art and Fluxus Movement that Ono joint in the early sixties and inspired numerous of her pieces such as ‘Cut Piece’ (1964).

Always performative and engaged, at times idealistic and sinister, the exhibition is in a way, a mini retrospective that can simultaneously be projected on a large scale over Yoko Ono’s oeuvre.
