‚Hot Topics‘

Milan

Cory Arcangel is currently exhibited at the Lisson Gallery in Milan with his Hot Topics solo show. Arcangel delivers a very unique version of America’s teenagers’ popular culture. Seven factions of objects, all identify by a color – pink, blue, orange – constitutes the body of work of the artist’s show, which is a complement to his exhibition at GAMeC – Gallerie d’Arte moderna e Contemporanea in nearby Bergamo. The pieces chosen by Cory Arcangel all respond to a certain subculture related to contemporary consumerist America and its teenagers.

American society is thus the connecting thread of the exhibition. Every sculpture is made out of a colorful pool noodle that serves as a pillar to highlight Arcangel’s objects. Hence, the ‚Clarity‘ piece features black headphones, a dub step’s armbands as well as an I pad mini, all slip on a pink noodle. Other sticks bring out pieces such as fluorescent leggings or a marijuana leaf, all emblems of American subculture but not just. Indeed, Arcangel’s exhibition is exploring the mass-market brand environment by referring to some fashionable products and goods belonging to the teenager’s favorites. Hot Topics is thus depicting in a very uncluttered way teenager’s most signifying symbols with a critical look on the overall market industries.
