Exactitudes

Cologne

When Ari Versluis and Ellie Uyttenbroek met almost twenty years ago, their cooperation organicaly became consistent and is nowadays known as Exactitudes:
A long-term photo project by which they systematically document social groups and their appearance. Each of their series is strictly structured and shows twelve similar persons, visually reminding of the works of Bernd and Hilla Becher. Some of the groups belong to subcultures, others don’t, yet they all share a characteristical dress code and usually the same poses.
When first working together in the early 90s, Ari and Ellie focused on these days prevailing Dutch youth culture: on gabbers. Whereas this series shows close-up portraits, the following ones present their characters in a standing pose.
Over the years and lots of travels around the globe, the two Dutch artists gathered a big selection of stereotypes that reach from nuns to gays. The variety of their work gets also visible at gallery Ruttkowski;68 that marks the first exhibition of Exactitudes in Cologne, Germany: An impressive, overwhelming though attracting wallpaper shows little squares next to each other all showing the different stereotypes.
