Jenny Holzer
‚A Retrospective‘

Somerset

‘Softer Targets’ is Jenny Holzer‚s new solo show at Hauser & Wirth Somerset. Presenting both new and notorious works, there are over three decades of the Holzer’s career on view. The artists minimal and conceptual art is driven by writings alluding to a feminist and anti-patriarchal ideology.

Holzer claims loud and clear her belief, on a cliff, a Greek monument, a t-shirt or a grave, every support can convey her messages, she performs in public and private space in order to widely deliver them. Hauser & Wirth is therefore dedicating all of its five spaces to Holzer’s writings and their demand. ‘MOVE’ an eight-foot LED work perceives the visitors presence and responds to it while projecting the prohibited report of an US Army about an Afghan soldier’s death. This work refers to Holzer’s ‘War Painting’ show at the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia currently happening at the 2015 Venice Biennale. It focuses on the failures committed by the US government during their wars and battles. Holzer is therefore spreading her voice in a pacifist yet tough and reflective way through artworks showed around the world.
