Katherine Bernhardt
‚Pablo and Efrain‘

Los Angeles

After the ‘FRUIT SALAD mural that Katherine Bernhardt painted this summer in downtown LA, the artist is now on show at Venus over Los Angeles. It presents works inspired by her time in Puerto Rico. Entitled ‘Pablo and Efrain’, it refers to the twins behind the Puerto Rican artist collective Poncili Creacion.

In a very expressive manner, Bernhardt combines everyday objects (cigarettes, sharpies, headphones) with Puerto Rico inspired features. First shaping the line in an abstract yet recognizable way, Bernhardt then fills them with spray paint and acrylic. With no blank space on the surface, her pieces tend over a kitsch custom that the artist likes to claim.

As a gesture to sustain her source of inspiration, the artist recovered the gallery floor with coffee bags from Puerto Rico. This act is a reminiscence of the website and pop up ‘Magic Flying Carpets’ she co-founded with her husband, Youssef Jdia to support the weaving tradition of the Berber women of Morocco.
