Amsterdam

Mach dich Hübsch! is the first Isa Genzken retrospective on Dutch soil. With a focus on sculpture the German artist works as well with photography, film, video, collages and books making of her corpus one of the most prevalent contemporary one. Her work evokes modernist architecture and material culture.

‘Rose’ (1993) and ‘New Buildings for New York’ 91995) constitute some of her most renown art pieces inspired by the city, its atmosphere and surroundings. Her art approach aims at conversing with and transforming the viewer through her non conformist viewpoint. Full of autobiographical elements her oeuvre reflects on the society with complex narratives. Her pieces challenge the past and innovate for the future as for her ‘Nofretete’ series (2014) or her famous ‘Schauspieler’ series of models that she dresses with her own belongings. Cerebral as with ‘Fenster‘ (1990) her cutting-edge art is led by her sayings that ‘ I always wanted to have the courage to do totally crazy, impossible, and also wrong things.’

The Stedelijk Museum exhibition opens in honor of the Amsterdam Art Weekend 2015 and occupies spaces in both the new and old wings the recently renovated museum.
