The Ballad Of Sexual Dependency of Nan Goldin is the central piece of the eponymous exhibition currently up at MoMa. This series taken between 1979 and 1986 draws attention to Goldin’s most significant work characteristics of the LGBT – Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender – scenes, sex, drug and love.

The Ballad Of Sexual Dependency – entitled after a song in Bertolt Brecht’s and Kurt Weills‘ The Threepenny Opera – is presented in its original 35 mm format accompanied with a soundtrack chosen by Goldin and her friends. The snapshot aesthetic images depict autobiographical moments ranging from couple fights, to sexual intercourses, family and friends vacation and celebrations. The Hug NYC, Nan and Brian In Bed and Nan One Month After Being Battered, all iconic and powerful images from the intimate and dependable series are all on view. As Goldin explains „The Ballad of Sexual Dependency is the diary I let people read. The diary is my form of control over my life. It allows me to obsessively record every detail. It enables me to remember.“ Photographs from the museum’s collection and a selection of material coming from the artist’s archive as well as live performances will periodically accompany The Ballad Of Sexual Dependency.
