‚Latent Forms‘

With ‚Latent Forms‘, Thomas Demand embraces the materiality of paper. Inspired by Japanese architecture, the German artist examines paper constructions in pure white shades.

Demand started to work on The Latent Forms series in 2011 when inspecting, inspiring and translating the minimalist architectural works of Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa from architectural company SANAA. Thomas Demand translates the perfect details, puristic forms and mastered shapes of the Japanese architecture into paper before capturing them with his camera. The result is poetic photographs in which the light constructions play with space and illusion and open never ending interpretation fields to the viewer.
