Emerging artist of the week

Our Emerging artist of the week is Christina Werner. Her multimedia installations are an interface for all of the senses to bound together and connect. We had the pleasure to talk with her about her studies, her new booklet and future projects.

Wertical: How do you describe your art to somebody who has never seen one of your work?
Christina Werner: My artistic work focuses on issues such as identity, migration, foreignness, the city and human beings. My works often revolve around cultural and/or political matters. I am especially interested in processes of change and intermediate states.

One reason for this interest lies within my personal experience. I was born in Switzerland from a Croatian mother and an Austrian father and brought up in Austria. I then studied in Eastern Germany, so that I have experienced migration which influences my artistic work.
Photography and video are two predominant forms of expression. Furthermore, I use text and found footage material that I merge in my multimedia installations.
The foundation of my artistic practice is research. Background information, personal contacts and archival material open new directions for my work.

WE: Where did you study?
CW: I studied Photography under Prof. Tina Bara and Intermedia under Prof. Alba D’Urbano at the Academy of Visual Arts (HGB) in Leipzig

WE: What did University and your professors give to you?
CW: I learned to discuss and be critical.When you work artistically it often requires for you to take a political stance.

WE: What are you currently working on?
CW: I recently finished a self-published interview booklet together with Katharina Brandl an Art Historian and Political Scientist. We speak about my works Neues Europa and The Boys are Back. You can also read it online.

I am currently preparing a new work about the 9/11 memorial and museum in New York. In September I will go to New York to shoot videos and photographs of the area. I also want to interview people about the place.

WE: What are your three artists to watch?
CW: Veronika Burger , Jakub Simcik and Juliana Herrero.

WE: What will your artist career look like in five years?
CW: Hopefully it will look good! With many exhibitions at home and abroad, while being part of federal collections, surrounded by a lot of nice people,…
